Where accessibility meets opportunity.
Traveling Ballantyne

Strategically located in South Charlotte, North Carolina, Ballantyne serves as one of the region's most vibrant mixed-use centers with direct access to I-485 and major thoroughfares. As a premier Charlotte suburban office location, its proximity to Charlotte Douglas International Airport, Uptown Charlotte, and surrounding residential communities makes Ballantyne an ideal destination for companies looking to attract top talent while providing convenience and connectivity. With a thriving mix of office, retail, dining, medical, hotels, and green space, Ballantyne offers comprehensive amenities in one location.

Why Transportation Accessibility Matters

Transportation accessibility has become increasingly crucial for both businesses and employees, directly impacting recruitment, productivity, and workplace satisfaction. For businesses, a well-connected location broadens the talent pool, making it easier to attract and retain top professionals while increasing employee engagement. For employees, diverse Ballantyne transportation options—whether public transit, micro transit, or walkability—improve work-life balance, provide greater flexibility, and lower commuting costs. Beyond strengthening economic growth and improving job opportunities, transportation accessibility creates more vibrant, connected business communities.

Ballantyne exemplifies this accessibility as a critical component of its initial master plan. Developed on family farmland in the 1990s by the Harris and Bissell families, Ballantyne was intentionally designed as a connected, convenient community. The original developers carefully considered maximizing convenience for businesses choosing to locate in the heart of the 2,000-acre community. Ample parking remains a desirable perk for those working at Ballantyne, while eight bus stops, 20 miles of walking paths and bike lanes, and greenway access demonstrate an ongoing commitment to multimodal solutions. With a new free shuttle for office customers and planned light rail stops, Ballantyne continues to expand transportation options that make navigating the area easier.

Major Highway Access in Ballantyne

Ballantyne highway access is essential to its outstanding connectivity. The area's strategic position adjacent to I-485 and proximity to I-77 creates an accessible business hub with convenient routes to key destinations.

From the north, take I-77 southbound to I-485 eastbound, then exit onto Johnston Road (Exit 61) going south. Ballantyne will be on your right at the first stoplight.

This strategic positioning ensures Ballantyne commute times to key Charlotte destinations, including Charlotte Douglas International Airport and Uptown Charlotte, typically remain within 20 minutes.

I-485 Express Lanes Project

The I-485 Express Lanes project currently under construction will add one express lane in each direction for approximately 17 miles between I-77 and Independence Boulevard (U.S. 74) in southern Charlotte. These significant I-485 Charlotte traffic improvements will provide more reliable travel times and improve overall traffic flow. NCDOT is creating a Direct Connector to Johnston Road from the I-485 Express Lanes, further enhancing accessibility to Ballantyne. The project also includes an additional general-purpose lane in each direction from Rea Road to Providence Road and other corridor improvements.

Coordinated with other projects in southern Mecklenburg County, this initiative will serve as part of a more extensive network of express lanes. Drivers can choose to use express lanes for a faster route by paying a toll or continue using the general-purpose lanes for free.

These express lanes are vital for addressing traffic congestion while offering drivers more reliable and predictable routes, effectively reducing Ballantyne commute times for daily travelers.

Ballantyne Public Transit Options

The LYNX Blue Line offers fast, quiet, convenient light-rail service to 15 stations between uptown Charlotte and I-485 at South Boulevard. Dozens of bus routes are timed to connect with trains at the Blue Line stations, making it easier for employees to commute to work.

Another key Ballantyne public transit option is the Charlotte Area Transit System (CATS) Route 43, which serves eight convenient locations throughout the Ballantyne campus, providing regular connectivity to the broader Charlotte transit network.

The Ballantyne area is also included in CATS' 2030 Transit Corridor System Plan, which will bring light rail to this Charlotte suburban office location. Three dedicated light rail stops have already been reserved on the Ballantyne campus, demonstrating a long-term commitment to enhancing public transportation access.
